Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - October 2007

Canadians have a lot to be happy about these days: Our currency is on par with the American dollar, new jobs are being created by the thousands, and separatist sentiment in both the east and west is diminishing.

According to the most recent Statistics Canada labour market report, the best in 33 years, national unemployment has fallen to 5.9 percent. Because of our broad social safety net, this is a level considered full national employment. In the month of September alone 51,000 new jobs were created. Average earnings have increased by considerably more than the cost of living in the last year, putting more money in the average persons pocket.

The only thing Canadas economy lacks now is labour. Making immigration for skilled workers easier and recognizing more foreign professional credentials are two things that the government needs to do to address our labour shortages.

Ontario, Quebec and Alberta have all had drops in the unemployment rate this year. In Ontario 30 000 new jobs were created in September alone. In Alberta, the unemployment rate is down to 3.9 percent and the labour shortages in the service industry are forcing fast-food restaurants to close. And Quebec, in addition to lowering unemployment has had the focus of separatist sentiment turn inwards, with questions like who is a Quebecer? taking the political stage.

It will be interesting to see how our booming economy and state of national harmony affect the Liberal Partys efforts to regain power. Its hard to make our current government look bad right now.
