Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - May 2009

A new immigrant resource centre in Saskatoon aims to simplify resettlement and act as a one-stop bureau for newcomers.

The centre had its grand opening this month, after heavy collaboration among volunteers from four Saskatoon immigrant service agencies. Funding for the new centre includes $ 252, 000 from the federal government as well as $50,000 from the Saskatchewan provincial government.

The mandate is to act as a single point of entry for new arrivals to Saskatoon. Instead of immigrants themselves having to search out the appropriate service for their needs, they can come to the Newcomer Information Centre, where staff will assess and refer newcomers to settlement services in the community.

Immigrants will also be able to use the computers at the centre to search for jobs and build Canadian CVs.

Saskatchewan is quickly becoming one of the most booming provinces in Canada, and the provincial government has been working hard to attract newcomers from other provinces and nations, aiming to welcome 10,000 new arrivals each year.

Recent figures from Statistics Canada indicate that more immigrants are choosing smaller urban centres such as Saskatoon, rather than the more traditional choices for resettlement such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
