New statistics show that immigration rates were at a four-decade high in the third quarter of 2010, propelling a jump in Canada’s population by over 100,000 people.
Over 84,000 immigrants arrived between July and October, resulting in a population growth of 129,300, according to the latest report from Statistics Canada.
Prince Edward Island reported the most growth at 0.7 percent and its 1,200 new arrivals was the biggest number the province has seen in almost 40 years.
Quebec and Manitoba reported similar results, receiving about 16,800 and 4,700 newcomers, respectively.
Government officials expressed no surprise at the numbers, saying that immigration levels will be maintained in the coming year.
“In 2010, we should be landing the largest number of permanent residents in 50 years,” said Citizenship and Immigration Canada spokesperson Kelly Fraser. “The post-recession economy is now demanding a high level of lefal immigration to keep the workforce strong.”
Canada’s total population reached an estimated 34,238,000 as of the first of October.
