If you are moving to Canada to become a permanent resident, there are clearly defined rules on when you can apply for Canadian citizenship. The system is set up to reward those intent on building a life in Canada by allowing them to become a fully-fledged citizen.
The current federal government recently shortened the length of time a permanent resident is required to be physically present in Canada before they can become a citizen. Permanent residents now need to be physically present in Canada for three out of the preceding five years before applying for citizenship. Applicants must also have filed income taxes for three out of five years, if required under the Income Tax Act. Applicants must also: • Meet the Citizenship Language Requirement, if between the ages of 18 and 54; • Meet knowledge of Canada requirements, if between the ages of 18 and 54; • Not be under a removal order; • Not have a criminal prohibition; • Pay processing fees. If you are coming to Canada as a temporary resident such as through one of the work permit programs, your first aim should be to achieve permanent residence. The Canadian work experience you gain here will count significantly towards your permanent residence application, alongside other factors including language ability, education and age. Recent federal government changes also mean time spent here as a temporary resident can count towards a future citizenship application. For every day in Canada as a temporary resident, half a day counts towards the citizenship physical presence requirement, up to a limit of a year.
