If you are moving to Canada to become a permanent resident, there are clearly defined rules on when you can apply for http://www.immigration.ca/who-qualifies-for-canadian-citizenship/" rel="nofollow - Canadian citizenship . The system is set up to reward those intent on building a life in Canada by allowing them to become a fully-fledged citizen. If you are coming to Canada as a temporary resident such as through one of the work permit programs, your first aim should be to achieve permanent residence. The Canadian work experience you gain here will count significantly towards your permanent residence application, alongside other factors including language ability, education and age. Recent federal government changes also mean time spent here as a temporary resident can count towards a future citizenship application. For every day in Canada as a temporary resident, half a day counts towards the citizenship physical presence requirement, up to a limit of a year.
