Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - July 2007

Changes in the Canadian demographic are certain to impact the labour market, according to a new report from Statistics Canada. Data gathered from the latest census illustrates that the number of Canadians approaching retirement age continues to increase rapidly, dramatically outpacing the rate at which new workers enter the job market. This trend, according to analysts is certain to affect employers and employees alike.

This group of Canadians, the "baby-boomer" population, has increased in number by 28 per cent in the past five years and is expected to continue to grow.

"In about 10 years, Canada may have more people at the age where they can leave the labour force than people at the age where they can begin working." said experts at Statistics Canada.

This is causing concern as employers try to implement policies to accommodate these changes in the workforce. Strategies such as more flexible hours have been suggested by business experts as a way to prevent the much-needed workers from retiring before their skill-set and knowledge can be transferred to the next generation.
