The federal government has allocated $375,000 in funding for improvements to Ottawas Elisabeth Bruyre Centre for Immigrants.
The announcement was made this week by Minister of Transport John Baird, who pointed out that Ottawa receives over 16,000 new arrivals annually, many of whom turn to the Centre for assistance in areas such as employment and housing.
This project will renovate the centre to ensure its sustainability and ability to continue to provide these important services, as well as new ones, said Baird while making the announcement.
The funds will be matched by the Centres own fundraising. Money will go towards various improvements, including a new elevator, increasing office space, flood-proofing of the basement and updating the heating and ventilation system. A portion of the funds will be allocated to creating a specialized wellness clinic at the Centre.
The federal governments share comes from a $4 billion fund for infrastructure stimulus. Approximately 1800 similar renovation projects in Ontario are receiving similar contributions.
