Immigration Minister Jason Kinney has announced that his government intends to maintain their immigration targets in 2009, despite the uncertain economic times that could lead to higher unemployment rates.
Kinney made the announcement while speaking this week to a parliamentary committee. He pointed out that his governments stance on the issue differs significantly from several other nations, who plan to decrease their own immigration targets in response to the downturn in the economy. Canada is looking beyond the current crisis situation toward the long-term needs of the job market.
We believe that when we have reached the recovery we have to face the labour market realities that we will need newcomers to help fuel the jobs of the future, Kenney said, adding that the government will also be flexible to necessary adjustments.
The government plans to closely monitor the labour market and the economic situation. Should the unemployment rate increase, the temporary foreign worker programs will be the first to be downsized.
