The Department of Citizenship and Immigration has announced a new immigration agreement with the Northwest Territories the first such agreement between a Northern Territory and the Canadian Government.
The Northwest Territories will now implement its own version of the Provincial Nominee Program, the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP). Other provinces such as Alberta have been using the Provincial Nominee Program to much success in recent years.
The nominee program allows for provincial, and now, territorial governments to nominate in-demand foreign workers for immigration fast-tracking. Certain workers who come to the province on temporary permits, and wish to stay permanently may have their applications considered by the federal government in priority.
The program attracts foreign workers whose skills are especially needed in certain areas, and is expected to do the same in the Northwest Territories.
This program will allow us to encourage the migration of skilled workers to the Northwest Territories, said Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, upon announcing the program last week. Foreign workers can assist us in building a strong, balanced and diversified economy that will benefit all Northerners.
Foreign workers in the Northwest Territories can now be nominated for qualification under four immigration streams; Skilled Worker, Critical Impact Worker (for service and hospitality workers), Entrepreneur Business or Self-Employed Business.
