The head of the Canadian Construction Association is predicting that within the next seven years the country will need to find approximately 300,000 new construction workers.
While speaking at a Saskatchewan Construction industry meeting, CCA head Wayne Morsky called upon his colleagues to step up recruitment efforts in Canada, particularly among First Nations groups who have large numbers of young adult populations.
"We must enhance the industry's efforts in promoting careers in construction to our youth, particularly to Canada's First Nations, where the median age is 27," Morsky said. "Aboriginal Canadians have been part of the strong and proud history of this industry and we must find a way to get them re-engaged in construction if we are to meet the future labour challenges."
Morsky went on to cite the possibilities of immigration as another means of recruiting the skilled workers that Canadas construction industry will soon drastically need. However, he was quick to add that the current system does not favour the building sector and will likely not change to do so in the near future.
Some experts are predicting that Canada is currently looking at over $200 million in necessary infrastructure repair or new construction.
