Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - May 2010

The Provincial Nominee Program in British Columbia is expecting more applicants than ever, and is being touted by the province as a successful way to bring in immigrants to satisfy the needs of the labour market.

"I think the program is definitely a success, and we're heading in the right direction in attracting [business] immigrants," said Moira Stilwell, B.C.s Minister of advanced education and labour market development. "This year has been a watershed year, a turning point, in exceeding our target. In 2009-10, we approved 122 applicants in the business immigration stream. We set a target of 120. For 2010-11, we're targeting 160 and we're on track.

The Provincial Nominee Program serves as a fast-track to permanent resident status for newcomers to Canada. Workers whose skills are in high demand are nominated by their employer and the province to have their immigration applications considered in priority. It can reduce an applicants waiting time from up to five years down to less than one year.

A new luxury resort is the latest construction project to benefit from the B.C. Provincial Nominee Program, as over the past eight years it has allowed hundreds of workers to enter Canada to help finish building the resort in Vernon, which will open this month.

"It [the Provincial Nominee Program] allowed me to come in and start my project, said Hans-Peter Mayr, CEO of the company who commissioned and built the new resort. What I liked very much was that [PNP personnel] were very helpful.
