Canadas churches may soon no longer provide sanctuary to individuals ordered out of the country, according to recent documents from the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Until the end of last month, the CBSA had no formal policy on church asylum, and no law to prevent them from penetrating that sanctuary. However, the CBSA has always chosen not to exercise their removal powers on desperate individuals being sheltered by the church.
Now the CBSA has articulated a new policy wherein certain circumstances would produce necessary entry into the church, though each case will still be examined on its own merit.
Such necessary conditions could arise when the public opinion is against the particular use of sanctuary or when the individual in question is a terrorist or murderer who threatens public security in Canada. They also may enter into a church when not doing so would pose a threat to the integrity of the immigration system.
In Canada there are currently three individuals under church protection from removal.
