Well, I was born and raised here so feel free to ask me questions if you would like. BTW... 1st thing... buy a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY warm winter coat and a good pair of winter boots lol LOL
and expect a lot of snow.... April is when we get the most.

But you'll like the Chinooks (a warm wind from the Rocky Mountains). Chinook winds can to raise our winter temperature often from below −20°C  (−4°F) to as high as 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) for a few hours or days, then temperatures plummet to their base levels, melting all of that wonderful snow, then freezing the leftovers to make our roads skating rinks again Wink. People often get headaches from the drastic change in the barometric pressure too.

Of late, Calgary has been the destination of new immigrants due to Alberta's oil sand economy. The weather is harsh yet warmed in the winter by sporadic Chinooks ( the warm Pacific wind currents flowing from BC). It is better for strugglers ( as most new immigrants are) to start from here.

Good luck , Sachiji . See you sometime there.

Oh yes and Northern Alberta’s oil sands are increasingly becoming a source of political conflict, both domestically and globally, as scrutiny of the world’s second-largest known oil reserve intensifies. While recent production in the oil sands has driven rapid economic growth in Alberta, there is increasing concern that this growth is causing unprecedented ecological harm and environmental destruction.

Here's info on Alberta Oilsands from the Government of Alberta: http://www.oilsands.alberta.ca/index.cfm - http://www.oilsands.alberta.ca/index.cfm

Mrs Sam,

The links are very useful.  I too am heading to Calgary once I receive my Visa.  My question relates to the current job market. Is there much talk about the financial services and IT industries in terms of available jobs or prospects?

Also, what is therental market like?

thanks for your help

Mrs. Sam,

How about being an agriculturalist in Canada? What other self emplyoment options do you advise in the case jobs are not easy to come by in hands.

    Hi krisp,

Well, it totally depends on what your qualifications are, experience, etc, how much start up money you have and how hard you are willing to work I suppose.  Self-employment depends on many different factors, you cannot just start up a company and expect to dollars to come running in. You are going to need connections and knowledge about the industry.... but all of that depends on what your qualifications and education are. Self employment takes guts and sacrifice, which I am not sure you want to tackle when you get to a new country.

    Mrs. Sam,
Thanks a lot for the information and your kind reply. Could you please also provide information regarding adjoining / nearest residential areas or communities where I can live with family to complete my Diploma or Certificate. Name couple of nice , safe living areas but with low monthly rentals.
