ICWAI's Institute of cost & works Accountants of India,  as you must understand that canadian itself has numbers of professional institutes and forums including chartered accountant , cost accountants etc etc .. and its very hard to enter into the system with foreign degree and certificates but of course not impossible..

Due to massive inflow of immigrants from all over the world Canadian job market now understand and recognize the foreign certificates and degrees.

Now it depends on each individual how he/she equipped him/herself :
1) The best is canadian local degree and certificate
2) than internationally recognized degree and certificates
3) third applicant home country degree and certificates

the more you towards the point 1 , more your chances of having professional job increases.

At this point of time the certificate from ICWAI falls under category 3 , but you can easily transform it in 2 by taking strategic examination of CIMA . check your local institute website or CIMA website for details.

Thanks & best of Luck!

P.S  IMA ( CMA) is also considered in category  3  so no need to take two certificates both are in category 3.

Lets all use our waiting time to sharpen our Skills before going to canada:--

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job with a timber merchant, and he got it. His salary was really good and so were the working conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to fell the trees. The first day, the woodcutter brought down 15 trees.

" Congratulations," the boss said. " Carry on with your work!"

Highly motivated by the words of his boss, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 10 trees down. The third day he tried even harder, but he was only able to bring down 7 trees.

Day after day he was bringing lesser number of trees down.

" I must be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

" When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked.
" Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees..."

That's right. Mos t of us NEVER update our skills. We think that whatever we have learned is very much enough. But good is not good when better is expected. Sharpening our skills from time to time is the key to succes

Dear Imran it depends on qualification someone has before applying but we will discuss about accountancy profession;

Usually the applicant from pakistan may have CA/ICMA/PIFPA/MBA

All these qualification are home country based qulaification and we can treat each of them in category 3.

category 1 qualification in Canada are , CA ( Canadian) , CGA , CMA and CPA canada.

All these qualification provides a good start up in Canada and help in getting good decent job.

Sadly there is no MRA or exemption policies between these two categories.

Pakistani CA or MBA must take full papers of Canadian CA or CGA or CPA in order to acquire such certificates means starts from scratch .

ICMAP from Pakistan may get Foundation-12 paper exemption (level 1-Level3) from CGA exams . But CGA entry requirements is university graduates means 4 years of bachelors program .

In order to reach the destination we need some bridging qualification (category 2)

The three bridging qualification that help the new immigrant to reach category 1 are
ACCA , ICAEW and CIMA

ICAP/ICMA may get upto 9 paper exemption in ACCA leaving 3 papers to qualify
ICAP needs 3 papers to write for ICAEW and in CIMA , ICMAP may get 7 paper exemption out of 11 papers.

CIMA(UK)has MRA with Candian CMA. ICAEW CA has MRA with Canadian CA. ACCA has MRA with CGA.

Thats it!

Best of Luck !

There is a mutual recognition scheme between members of the global accounting body ACCA and CGA members:

http://www.cga-canada.org/en-ca/International/StrategicAlliances/MraAccaCga/Pages/ca_mra_acca_cga.aspx

I am an ACCA student in Canada, originally from the UK, in the final stages currently studying for ACCA membership, when I plan on becoming a CGA under the MRG. There are, I believe, similar recognition schemes in place for CAs and CMAs.

Dear English Muffin ,

Could you please elaborate the detailed procedure for having CGA certificate through MRA ( with ACCA).

Hi Sayyed

You just need to be a qualified member of the ACCA, then take one exam for the CGA level 2 course on tax and law. As long as you maintain your designation with the ACCA (pay membership fees with them each year), you can practice as a CGA as well in Canada.

More details here: http://www.cga-canada.org/en-ca/International/StrategicAlliances/MraAccaCga/Pages/ca_mra_acca_initial_application_process.aspx

There are over a thousand ACCA students in Canada, so if anyone is moving here as an ACCA student, you won't be alone. ACCA is not well recognised, but as soon as you register with the CGA and they give you equivalency grade, you'll find yourself a job.

Hope that's okay.

Thanks ,

One more question what about ACCA members who obtain the membership through exemptions fully or partial.

Yeh its good idea . on the basis of your ICAWI you only need to pass strategic course of CIMA .

CIMA(UK)has MRA with Candian CMA.

so at the end you will have one Canadian degree ( certificate).

But please check that whether Canadian CMA will award membership( certificate) on the basis of CIMA(UK) if CIMA (UK) is acquired through partial or full exemptions.

Yo can email CMA - Canada to check.

If MRA is not applicable in that case take  along route and write all papers.

Good Luck!

Please share the reply.

I am a US citizen.  I have an undergraduate degree from an accredited school where I earned a Bachelor's in Finance.  I am working on a Master's in Business Administration and am considering a career in accounting.  I have met all the requirements and plan on taking the CPA-USA exam in Idaho, Oregon, or Washington.  At the age of 27 I am now considering moving to Canada with my wife (who also has a Master's degree).

If I choose to move to Canada, would the CPA be valuable to employers or should I plan on taking a Canadian accounting equivalent?  Is the CPA-USA transferable in anyway toward a Canadian license?

Hello Amit,

Thank you for your interest in the Mutual Recognition Agreement offered through the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (CMA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants of the United Kingdom (CIMA). This Mutual Recognition Agreement presents a unique opportunity for CIMA members to become Certified Management Accountants.

To be eligible for admission, applicants must:

·         Possess a university degree or the equivalent, recognized by CMA Ontario.  Applicants without a university degree will be accepted for membership if they possess a minimum of five years of practical experience at the “incontestable level” in a strategic leadership position or a blend of experience at the CS-3 and CS-4 levels of the CMA Competency Map (attached).

·         Be legally entitled to either work in Canada or be a citizen of Canada, and have a residential or business address in Ontario.

·         Possess a minimum of two years (24 months) of relevant practical experience at the managerial level (CMA Competency Map CS-2), of which one year must be gained while employed in Canada.

·         Be a member in good standing with CIMA with no outstanding disciplinary charges or outstanding complaints that are in the course of investigation.

·         Declare any previous disciplinary action and any criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.

·         Have qualified as a professional accountant by completing the entire CIMA program of studies.  Also, applicants must have started the CIMA program of studies prior to immigrating to Canada.  If the applicant completed part of a program through a third organization and received advanced standing with CIMA, CMA Ontario reserves the right to accept or reject the application at its discretion.

·         Have not previously attempted and failed a CMA Canada qualifying examination.

The MRA CIMA Application must be accompanied with a completed Practical Experience Reporting Form.  This application will allow the Society to ensure you have completed all the requirements of the Mutual Recognition Agreement.  MRA CIMA Applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis.

The second step in the process is the completion of the Certified Membership Application form.  This application form requires you to have an active, certified CMA Member act as your sponsor for the designation. You will also be required to pay the yearly Certified Membership fees of $799.05.  Applications must be approved by the Ontario Board of Governors which meets three times a year.

I would like to thank you for your interest in the CMA designation.

Will the CMA certificate add points to my profile on the CRS ranking?
Looking forward to your help

Thanks
