Hello

I have a question. What does it mean when you work as a contractor for a company. What are the differences with being an employee of the company?

contractor means u work on a contract basis with the company..so for eg a 6 month contract, u get paid by the hr.... in a contract there r usually no benefits like EI, insurance but then the pay is higher...for most of the companies when u work as a contract employee, u will need to incorporate ur own company in order to work as a contract employee

U also have the choice of sole proprietorship but then again it depends on the company hiring you. Most have no problems hirng under either one. There are certain tax benefits to being incorporated but you really should consult an accountant or tax lawyer. This only applies to contracting. However u need to be careful of you definition of contract. You need to be defined as an independent contractor to be considered a contractor under the CRA

Hi citronela, you can also be a contract employee working for a company but being paid through an employment agency. In this case, you are not a sole-proprietor or incorporated.

You basically, work on a short-term basis (depending on the duration of the contract, which may be renewable) for the company and submit your time-sheets to the employment agency (not to the HR department of the company you're working for).

Taking on a contract job is a good way to get your foot into the door and get some Canadian experience. It worked very well for me when I first came to Canada over a decade ago.

Wow thank you all for your insightful comments, this really puts things in perspective. I appreciate all who have had a say in this matter. Truly. trainers are never going to be honestly happy until we get our own studio, hands down! Yes....owner is very greedy!

Yes all of these are completely accurate.  Contracted positions often don't have good benefits, and are sometimes not a set number of hours.  For example, a company might hire someone to work with a group of http://www.alliedvanlines.ca/movers.aspx - movers if they have a lot of homes to move in a certain week.  The company would have employees that are hired all year round, but if they need more for a temporary amount of time, they would contract some more people.
