My brother in law and sister signed a sponsorship for our mother to come over to Canada on a family class immigration in 2009. Ever since she has been here myself and my husband have made sure she has everything she needs including paying her rent and other bills and giving her money for groceries. Please note that my sister has never had employment in the 20 odd years of marriage or since they separated due to the fact that she is caring for 2 special needs children. Can we sue my brother in law for the money we have spent? I know I sound like a bitch but we are financially supporting my sister now too and it's becoming a burden. Somehow he has managed to avoid giving her any spousal support by dragging this through courts for more than 5 years. I honestly don't regret helping out my sister or my mom but I feel like he shouldn't have co-signed if he didn't intend to stick to the bargain. My husband and I had offered to sign as sponsors for my mom at the time but he insisted that he would do it. We are looking at over $50K at this point.
