Dear Sir/ Madame, The new requirement to citizenship is that one need to stay in Canada for 1460 days. Would new government would revisit the physical Residence requirement ? Are they working on the subject ? Please advise. Thanks

Interesting how quickly things sometimes change. While many were clamoring for restoring a three year requirement, a week ago there was virtually no sign that was on the government's agenda. Now Bill C-6 has been tabled, second reading scheduled to begin a week from tomorrow, proposing to do precisely that, to implement a three year presence requirement. And three out of five at that, a more generous, flexible rule than even what it was before the Harper government brought in the 4/6 rule. ------------- Bureaucracy is what bureaucracy does, or When in doubt, follow the instructions. The Bill is currently in its second reading, which appears to be relatively fast. But there really is no good prediction for how long the process will take. Moreover, there is no guarantee the Bill will be adopted. It appears very likely it will be adopted. But no guarantee. The timeline, though, is near impossible to forecast. The Bill could be adopted within the next six months or significantly later in the year. Possibility of going longer than that, but the likely range is between June and the end of the year. The change in presence requirement will not take effect immediately, but will come into force on some later date, to be determined by the Governor in Council (Trudeau and some advisors). Best guess: the change in presence requirement could take effect as soon as sometime later this year (fall say) or not until mid-2017, and possibly not by then. Overall, the current law is what applies and will continue to apply. And there is no relying on the changes taking effect by any particular date. ------------- Bureaucracy is what bureaucracy does, or When in doubt, follow the instructions.
