Credential Evaluation in Canada,

Hi all,

Shucks guys, am I happy to see that the forum exists. I was trying to post a question on the old one...and seriously thought it had been shutdown.  I've got a question here and I'd really be grateful if I could get as much perspective as possible.

My wife is to come to Canada (as a PR) in Oct. However, before that I'd like to lay the ground for her by finding a course for her to enroll in, prior to posting her resume online. She has about 6 yrs work experience ranging from a call center rep to 2 yrs as senior branch manager for Reliance Life Insurance. She wants to work here as soon as possible but I suggested doing a course or a bridging course to start with. My questions are as follows;
1. Will her work experience come on handy here? She doesn't want to carry on in insurance but something related to sales.
2. I wanted her to do a degree here but it seems she has to write the GMAT for that and since this path would take alot of time (family planning and all)...we're thinking about going against it. She wants to do a course in customer retainment and anything related. Do you know of colleges / universities offering this or courses related to this? I'm in the networking field here in Toronto and have absolutely no idea where to look and whom to ask. Even suggesting career counselors would be a big help.
3. I was also thinking of having her credentials (B.COM) evaluated but is this really worth the money and time? How will it come in handy? To me this is just a huge money making racket...
4. If credential evaluation is worth it, then could you help me decide between http://WES - WES and http://learn.utoronto.ca/ces.htm - CES ?

Any suggestions guys? Much appreciated...

she wud need GMAT if she wants to do her MBA. If she has a BCOM and I am assuming from India then she wont be able to do her masters because universities require 16yrs of formal education and BCom in India is only for 3 yrs which makes it 15 yrs of formal education. There are a lot of community colleges offering diplomas in various fields for eg senecca college, humber college, geroge brown, etc..just google.

Thanks alot Tanushree....that was a big help. Any idea about evaluating your credentials? Is it something really worth the time and money? Reason being, if it could give us an idea as to what level of education it compares to here in Canada, couldn't she just do the required courses instead of a whole course?

What is the scope of doing a bachelors in commerce (with a specialisation) here....as far as job prospects are concerned.

Looking forward to another great reply,

Wink

well personally speaking if u ask me it wud make sense to get professional degrees like law, medicine, architecture etc evaluated. The main problem is i have a lot of frnds and cousins who have gone to canada to do a diploma have ended up getting jobs to survive on but because their degrees in India were only for 3 years, many of them had to go and do a degree again there. U will have to find out from the univs there but then if a person has to repeat a bachelors there, he or she does get some credit there in the univs, the Indian bachelors will be considered a diploma and the person will have to spend another 2 years to get his/her bachelors.
Getting a job to some extent also depends on luck. If she is interested in teaching maybe she cud go in for a BED and then teach. School teachers may not get a lot of money but then they have relaxed hrs, 2 months of vacation etc etc.
Also if she wants to get like a job in a bank and all for starters it may not be very difficult but for growth she will have to study in canada because apart from IT guys other people do struggle a lot sometimes. In canada more emphasis is on local education and local exp.

I can understand that someone may not want to repeat bachelors but u shud surf job sites see what kind of job options are available and decide on which course to pursue. There is also a lot of demand for compliance jobs in banks and for that she can easily do courses like canadian security courses, mutual fund courses etc..

Thank you again...Tongue Tanushree,

From the way I understand it, you suggest doing a bachelors degree then. And in order to complete the degree in 2 yrs rather than in 4, I'd need to have her credentials evaluated? Or would it be enough if I got in touch with someone from that specific department in the University to ask if she could get come credit for her 15yrs of education?

My wife wants a career in sales (specifically in customer retention). I have tried searching for courses for the same (customer retention) but haven't found any yet. I did speak with a person about this and they said that there isn't any specialised course in customer retention....it's just something that is part of sales. If I asked her to consider a profession in teaching....well, you just might not find me in this world ever again Wacko. She the type of person who loves to play with fire if you know what I mean and so a relaxing career for her is something that would be very stressful for me. Ouch

Another thing I don't really seem to understand are the terms undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate. Is undergrad-12th, grad-bachelors and post-grad - masters? She's done with her BCom right? but she doesn't have 16yrs of education so would that make her a high-school student or bachelor, when applying for courses here?

So a degree would have a better weight than a cert or diploma or advanced diploma for that matter? Is it possible to get a decent job here with a degree or does one have to have a Masters? I did run a search for account managers and sales managers and others on the same line but most of them did not specify an educational level.

yes undergrad is 12th or it cud even be a diploma holder. grad is a 4 yrs bachelors and post grad is masters. Yes a degree wud have better weight than a diploma or cert. Because if u enrol for a short diploma u have to spend one yr in school. U can contact all these colleges  for bachelors and exemption. Indian grad will be considered equivalent to a normal diploma (which is 3 yrs after 12th in canada). Local students who do not get into a 4 yrs grad directly first do a diploma for 3 yrs and then go i for grad so they get an exemption and have to study for 2 yrs instead of 4 years.

Well have u done a thorough check on all the job portals. u will also have to check the intake deadline for all the univs...they have a deadline if i am not wrong for admission...Once she is a PR she will be considered a local candidate and fees will be much lesser....

U can easily get a decent job with a degree there, depends on luck..U see unline India, U.S and Canada there is not a lot of emphasis on masters...She can always do a masters later on..

Also find out that most of these schools offer evening classes or weekend classes for grad..that if she finds a job she can study and work at the same time..I think thats a better option to get some income while studying even if the studies takes a bit more time....

Thank You very much Tanushree...you're advice has really been very very helpful and has given me a much better understanding of how things work around here.

I will continue to research various avenues and should I have more questions, I'll post them up here.

Once again, thank you very much and God bless,

i just saw that ur wife is coming in oct.Has she gotten her PR already. Why doesnt she start applying for courses right away then. The usual intake in colleges is sept and then sometime in feb. The dealines may have passed but if she decides to do a diploma admission will not be a problem, she can apply now. There r a lot of consultants in india who deal with admissions to colleges in canada...u can try contacting one of them too.

You are welcome and thanks for the blessings...I am still to land in canada..will be going next month but have done enough research on every possible option in canada for me to work but still not decided what to do. Lot of frnds and cousins u are in canada doing a diploma and then applying for immigration which is a quicker way of immigrating......

How did u go to canada, did u immigrate there or have been there from a long time? If u immigrated recently was is easy finding a job.....

i guess all of us want to find a job as soon as possible but i think its a better option to be a little patient....come settle down in the new place...see the options.....There is no point in picking up a job just for the heck of it.......Sometimes people get stuck in the wrong kind of jobs and then r not able to shift. Rather wait for some time and then shop around for the best job unless circumstances r such that a person has to find work immediately in order to sustain.

i see that ur wife also has call centre exp..There are a lot of options like those in canada....U can look at that...Like banks have call centres, aditya birla minacs for the beginning until she studies and then finds a job in the desired field

I came here in 2006 as a student. A month before finishing college in 2007, I got a very good job with an IT company. Last year in about July I applied for immigration and I'm almost done....I just have to submit my police clearance and get my passport stamped. My wife and I applied together so she'll get her PR when I get mine which will hopefully be in a month or two.

At the moment, getting into Canada is your first priority. Once you're in....you'll get accustomed to various options available here and then making a decision or changing your path will be much easier.

The job market is low at the moment, so studying is something that is viable at the moment. However, I do understand that getting a job after you finish studying is of prime importance. Study very very hard, be not amongst the top best...but be the best. This is what I did, and I got a job.

Which college are you going to be studying in and where are you living? I studied in George Brown College, living in Toronto.

I got my credentials evaluated so need to give exams and all so its a long long way for me.... :) not scared of hard work....getting a job is not a problem..there r various options so to sustain i will definitely get some or the other job..now whether its a job which is to my liking is the question :)

Hi Tanushree... I've been a silent reader of this topic.... I'm a Systems Administor in the UK and have been working in IT for 5+ years in London now. I recently got my PR too and am looking to Land in Toronto in April 2011.

In your post above, you mentioned that you got your crendentials evaluated and so need to give exams, what exams and why? Could you please elaborate?

I am thinking of getting my BCA degree from India and Masters from UK evaluated as well but not sure if its worth doing as i'm into IT.... just curious what exam you are having to give after evaluation.

Cheers,
Nina.

Hello Nina,
I am 2004 applicant at NewDelhi.I would appreciate if you could give me constructive feedback regarding the Canadian credential assessment & evaluation while we are in our Native country.

Please elaborate, as I had already completed the Chemical Engineering Degree attestation & Authentication from India as such: HRD attestation,Ministry of External affairs and Apostille sticker.

Do you apply thru' any Canadian agents for Canadian education equivalency?.

What is the procedure for the same?.

Other than Nina, anybody can throw some lights on the same.

Please revert me.

Regards,

Charan.
