Hi,
I have a currently a PR status in Canada but I don't live here. My wife and kids live in Canada since Aug 2013. My PR card will expire in May 2016 and I don't meet the residency obligation time of 730 days.
I consulted an Immigration specialist and he advised me not to apply for renewal as I don't have proof of residency for enough time. I cannot come and live in Canada now.

Instead, he advised me to cancel my status and let my wife apply for sponsorship. Until I git that I will get a multiple visit visa to Canada.

Is this solution risky or not? any one have seen the same case and can help me. My wife's PR card will expire in Aug 2018.

1. It is risky. There is no guarantee that a TRV will be issued if you voluntarily relinquish your PR status.
2. Also if your spouse sponsors you after relinquishing your PR you better have a very good plan to show that you will be returning to Canada. There was a case reported in CanLII in 2013 where the sponsorship was refused as the IAD didn't believe the applicant was really going to reside in Canada. I.e. hadn't quit job or cancelled overseas resident visa.
