What are the terms of a student visa?

Are you allowed to leave the country, and re-enter Canada on a student visa?

We are planning a week long trip down South, and are wondering if there will be problems.

Thanks again!

If your student visa is multiple, then you can leave the country and enter again within the validity of the visa.

Here's what I read on CIC's site:

If you leave Canada and want to return, you must have:

  • a valid passport or travel documents
  • a valid study permit if you are returning to study in Canada and
  • a valid temporary resident visa if you are a citizen of a designated country for which Canada requires a visa.

If you are a citizen of a designated country and you travel to a country other than the United States, Greenland or Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, you will need a multiple-entry visa to re-enter Canada. If your temporary resident visa has expired or if your visa was only valid for a single entry, you must re-apply for a temporary resident visa at a Canadian visa office outside Canada before you can re-enter Canada.

On reading this - it seems that if you have the first two (passport and valid study permit) you should be ok - UNLESS you are from a 'designated' country that requires a TRV.

In this case, my partner has the first two requirements.  She is originally from France, which is not one of the 'designated' countries.

I'll call CIC to be sure - but here's to hoping that we can go to Mexico, have a great trip, and BOTH come back to Canada.

:)

UPDATE:  We went to Mexico in December and were able to return to Canada with absolutely no problems. Smile
