I want to apply for a work visa in Canada but I'm unsure about the process I have to go through in order to obtain a temporary work visa. Do I have to get a job here first and then apply? This seems very confusing as I can't see an employer hiring me without a visa first. Has anyone been through this process that can offer me advice?

If you do not have a job in Canada why do you want to apply for a work visa in Canada? OK, dumb question . . . since the answer is obvious. But, actually, it is not a dumb question because the obvious answer points to the real question: how can a foreigner come to Canada to live and work while living in Canada (temporarily or otherwise).
Frankly it depends on many, many things. Where you are from is very close to the top of the list. A person from a NAFTA country has a whole range of options those from outside NAFTA do not. What your profession is matters a great deal. Topline engineer with extensive and well-documented experience, well-heeled academic credentials from comparable industrialized country, lots of opportunities to come to Canada to work. Work history largely in janitorial services in a third world country, no university credits, getting to work (legally) in Canada is not going to be all that easy. Perhaps you have already visited the CIC resources. If not, try the pages at the following url addresses. Once you have looked those over some perhaps you can pose a more focused question. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.asp http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/work/index.asp http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/employers/lmo-basics.asp |

Bureaucracy is what bureaucracy does, or When in doubt, follow the instructions. Otherwise, follow the instructions.

I don't know what your situation is, but if you are or just finished being a student at a US institution, you can get a temporary work permit on the SWAP program, good for up to 6 months.
http://www.swap.ca/in_eng/us_index.aspx Don't know if this helps or not, but it is another option.
