I have a query that might be slightly unconventional. Perhaps someone might be able to shed some light on this.  Some facts first.

1. Im a permanent resident.
2. Spousal/Family Class
3. Been in Canada since Dec 2011. Havent left since.
4. Separated
5. Jobless . Such is the life of a professor.

Now Ive been offered a great opportunity to put my skill set to work but overseas. Not a Canadian business. It's a one year contract. How will this effect my permanent residency? Will my status be in jeopardy?

Thanks.

1. As long as you meet the 2 years residence in Canada in every 5 to maintain your PR status, then a 1 year absence would be fine.

thanks!

the PR card does not expire? I can keep spending two years in Canada out of every five and I can keep it? Also I imagine these would not have to be consecutive two years right?

Is there some way I can save tax on my income abroad? Id already be paying income tax there, i have no choice in the matter.

The PR card expires every five years.

To meet the residency obligation you must live in Canada two out of every five rolling years. The two years do not have to be consecutive. "Rolling" means that at any time when you look back at the previous five years, two of those years must have been spent living in Canada.
