The copper conductors in a squirrel-caged motors are just short-circuited in its ends while in a slip ring motor, the conductors are connected in series to a star point. The resistance in the latter are higher than that of the former motor. The windings are connected in series with an external resistance through carbon brushes to increase its resistance during start-up. The slip ring motors usually have higher starting torque and lower starting current than squirrel-caged motors. |
