My daughter was born in 1973 outside of Canada. At that time, the children of Canadian mothers, whose fathers were not Canadian (mine is American), could not acquire CDN citizenship through their mothers. She came to Canada with us in 1974, and became a citizen in her own right in 1989 at 16, as soon as she was eligible to apply.
She is now caught in this IRS crackdown on dual citizens. Since the law has now changed, to give citizenship to children of Canadian mothers born abroad, I would like to have her citizenship recognized from birth. The only individuals allowed to renounce US citizenship without severe financial penalty are people who were born dual citizens. The citizenship call centre advises me that her citizenship cannot be backdated. Does anyone have other advice? thanks....
