Hi,
I am in US on a H1 visa. I have to move to Canada to continue my work assignment because my US visa is expiring. I have a temporary work permit to Canada for 2 years. 1) Can I drive my car that I use in US to Canada? 2) Do I need to payoff the loan on my car? 3) What is the process to move the car there? Regards Ali. |

Hi
1. Yes. 2. No, but check with the holder of the loan. 3. As you will becoming to Canada for less than 3 years, you don't have to export the car, nor import it into Canada. CBSA will give you a temporary import permit valid for the length of your work permit. You will have return the car to the US at the end of work permit. You can sell or give the car away in Canada.http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5048-eng.html#s3x1 |

Hi,
Thanks for the information. Is there any paper work I need to complete before I drive my car to Canada or can I just drive up to the border and complete all formalities there? Is there any specific border post I need to drive thru if I am traveling from New Hampshire to Toronto? Regards Ali |

This would be something you'd handle at a Port of Entry.
The most direct route from NH is likely to be via I-190 (Buffalo) from I-90 (so drive south to the MA Pike and then westward until you get to Buffalo.) That's a major crossing point, with 24 hour services. I drove my NH plated vehicle across the border numerous times (and I was living in BC, so this was across the WA/BC border) without any problems at all (I didn't own the vehicle, it was a company lease vehicle). They never questioned me at the border, although I did get some very peculiar looks. PMM left out the operative term "not" so that should have said "You can not sell or give away the car in Canada." |
