Canada seeks India's help to curb illegal migration

NEW DELHI: Canada's Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney Tuesday met Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and sought India's cooperation to curb illegal migration by sharing information on "unscrupulous fraudsters" involved in the racket.

"Mr. Ravi and I had a good discussion on the challenges faced by both the countries due to immigration fraud. We can curb this by sharing information on fraud agents. There are unscrupulous fraudsters who fake documents and cheat both the governments as well as innocent applicants," Kenney told reporters after the meet.

"Mr Ravi intends to come forward with measures to put a check on the issue and we appreciate his approach," he said, adding that Canada "benefits" from the "large and growing" migration from India.

Ravi said that illegal migration has to be checked with full cooperation of the states.

"The ministry will organise seminars in identified districts of various states to keep applicants informed of fraudsters," he said, adding the immigration authority bill to be introduced in the next session of parliament, along with e-governance and e-migration plans, will help to check these issues.

"We operate in a difficult situation so we do reject genuine applications too but we try and approve as many genuine applications as possible," he said, assuring of "strong action against those involved in human smuggling and illegal migration".

Kenney is on a three-day visit to India and as Punjab and Haryana are the states with maximum number of migrants to Canada, he will visit Chandigarh Thursday, the last day of his trip to India.

On the one side, barbecued hamburgers, cops and bunches of blue balloons. On the other, vegan samosas, protesters and a piñata.

A Conservative fundraiser and campaign-style rally featuring local federal candidate Marty Burke and Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney also brought out opponents of the government’s record on immigration.

About 20 protesters, including members of the migrant rights group Fuerza/Puerza and the Youth Communist League set up a food table and rally on Tuesday at a Riverside Park picnic area, opposite where the Guelph Conservatives hosted a meet-and-greet barbecue.

Armed with placards and a pair of speakerphones, the group denounced Kenney for everything from the detention of Tamil migrants who arrived by boat of British Columbia last month, to immigration raids and a lack of protections for migrant farmhands.

They even brought out a piñata, complete with a picture of Jason Kenney sporting red eyes and a beard, to whack around.

Another news, good or bad, don't know.
Kenney will not invite us for a meeting but may issue a statement that he will see what he can do with the backlog. This news may come in the media by tomorrow 10:00 PM.

Minister Kenney on international tour

Although the meetings will discuss diverse topics concerning immigration, the focus is to enforce meaningful regulation of fraudulent immigration activity, such as marriages of convenience and crooked immigration consultants and representatives.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney is on an official visit to Paris, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Hong Kong, Beijing and Manila. He is meeting various representatives and officials to discuss issues relating to immigration to Canada, as part the federal government’s initiative to international cooperation.

Although the meetings will discuss diverse topics concerning immigration, the focus is to enforce meaningful regulation of fraudulent immigration activity, such as marriages of convenience and crooked immigration consultants and representatives.

The trip started in Paris where Kenney met with the French minister responsible for immigration to discuss issues as illegal immigration, border security, human trafficking and smuggling, and the resettlement of refugees.

In New Delhi, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Manila the focus will be on how the federal government’s recent announcement to increase intake of skilled immigrants will affect them. The minister also highlights that the Philippines has become one of the largest source countries of immigration to Canada.

In New Delhi, a group, which calls itself New Delhi Pre-February 2008 Applicants Forum, has sought an appointment with the minister during his visit to India. The group’s members hope to present their concerns including on long waits that take up to 90 months for a decision to be made on applications dating as far back as year 2003.

In Chandigarh, India, the meetings will discuss progress made on anti-fraud initiatives since his January 2009 meeting with the Chief Minister of Punjab. “Since then, there have been media reports of a number of arrests in Punjab of crooked immigration consultants”, says Kenney in a press release.
