Hi I have had a relationship with a man in Jamaica online for the last few years (4 yrs or so) and we are trying all avenues to have him come to canada. eventually for good, but for now just to visit for awhile. I am facing one issue. I do  have a criminal record here in canada. is this going to make it hard for us? can someone plz help with any ideas?

I have not read that the sponsor cant sponsor when they have a criminal record. Can you read the guide if you have not. Also if you want him to visit then you have to invite him for a visa(TRV) which for some reason is hard to come by.

It also will depend on the type of crime but like i said, i dont think it can prevent you from sponsoring him.

Brit, Can you explain more on what you think on myboo's question

The guides say if the sponsor has been charged with assault against a family member etc they may be ineligible. The other part that touches on crime is the part that asks if the sponsor has been charged with an offence punishable by up to ten years or if the sponsor has been charged with a crime for which a decision has not been made. If a decision has not been made then they may continue processing but based on the verdict the sponsor may become ineligible.
Application sent May 13, 2010
Started processing July 22, 2010.
Decision made March 7, 2011
Landed April 13th 2011
The whole process took exactly 11 months!

In IMM1344 A - application to Sponsor and Undertaking - it says

 - In the 5 years preceding your application to sponsor have you been convicted of a sexual offence or an offence against the person in relation to one of your family members?

it also says on Q16 - Have you been charged with an offence under an act of parliament punishable by the maximum term of imprisonment by at least 10 years

If you have a misdemeanour or lesser offence that is not sexual assault or GBH etc against a family members wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend etc then you may be ok to sponsor
