options while waiting for PR card

Hi, i hope someone here can help me. I had to come to Italy urgently for family matter and had an expired PR card. I went to an immigration specialist, with a business in Toronto for help to expedite my PR card. He assured me that it could be ready by the time i would in the middle of my trip and then he could mail it to my familys address in Italy. Long story short, the pr people told him they could not expedite my card since i was no longer in Canada, although he says he followed all the rules and requirements for expediting the process.  My trip of almost 1 month is near its end and according to the advertised backlog, my application is still 2 months away from even being looked at. I have a job to get back to as well as my life. I was told that even a travel document which could be filed with the embassy in Rome could take a couple of weeks to process. I have asked my immigration consultant for options, considering this is partly his fault, and he is now suggesting i try to re-enter Canada through the US. I have all my documentation, other than my PR card, which shows i live in Canada, but im unsure about how sound a strategy this is. Can anyone give me some advice.  I really want to get back home before the end of the month. is the process he is suggesting viable? could i get in some worse trouble? any help would be appreciated.
