Hi there - I am about to join in the fray of sponsors, but would like some advice on the best was to approach my application.
Background:
My g/f of 1 year came to Canada on August on a student visa (taking ESL to improve her English - note: she is already fluently French, and also fluently Japanese). Student visa expires in July, and she is registered for courses until then.
We married in Canada on Halloween (super fun!).
Now - what is the best way to approach immigration?
Should we be advising CIC that her status has changed from single to married?
What steps should we take to begin the sponsorhip process?
Thanks to all for your advice!!!

You will have to submit an application for permanent resident status.
To kick off the process, familiarize yourself with the information provided on the following page and relevant links: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse-apply-how.asp One key decision you will have to make is whether to submit an inbound or outbound application. Good luck. |

hi harmonia! i guess you don't have to inform them for the change of status. they gonna know bout that anyway coz you will include your marriage cert when you send your application.

In terms of whether to file In-Canada or Overseas Spousal you have to take into account the following:
- if the sponsorship can be finalized at CPC Vegreville, it can be over and done with within 6 months
- if, however, the sponsorship is forwarded for whatever reason to a local CIC centre, you will fall into the "black hole" and can expect up to 1.5- 2 years of processing time
- if you file the application overseas, depending on which visa post is involved, it might be finalized within similar time frame as at CPC Vegreville
- and finally, there's no right of appeal to the IAD in case of refusal when you file In-Canada spousal, but you do have such right when you file overseas
so, always, it's a balancing act.
