If I enter Canada on a UK passport, can I then apply for a 6 month visitor visa while staying in Canada?

No. Foreign Nationals carrying a passport from a visa exempt country do not ordinarily obtain visitor visas. Upon entry into Canada as a visitor, if no restriction is placed on a person carrying a UK passport, the individual may remain in Canada for up to six months as a visitor. POE officers, however, may issue the UK citizen a Visitor's Record (VR) for a time the POE officer deems appropriate, which can range from a few days to weeks to months, to even more than six months in some cases. Typically, though, if a VR is issued it is for a period of time significantly less than six months. In either case, while still within the time authorized during the entry into Canada (six months if not given a VR or otherwise restricted), the Foreign National may apply to extend his or her visitor status. |

Bureaucracy is what bureaucracy does, or When in doubt, follow the instructions. Otherwise, follow the instructions.
