Hello,
I'm a Canadian and my wife is Greek. We currently live in Greece, and are expecting our first child in September. We want our child to have Canadian status only. a) is it possible me to bring her to Canada to give birth even though she's not Canadian? What paperwork would be required for this and who do I need to contact? b) if the child is born in Greece, can the child obtain Canadian nationality only without getting Greek nationality? I know this can be done with American children born in Greece. Thank you, Alex

First question, if you need to bring her to Canada she will have to get a visitor's permit just like any other foreign national. There is no "special" visitor visas for spouses of Canadians. In fact, getting a visitor status for her in Canada will be more difficult because her spouse is Canadian than if both of you were non-Canadians. The child born overseas can apply for Canadian citizenship. However, whether the child can then transfer Canadian citizenship to her children in the future will depend on the father's status. If the father is naturalized (that is, was not born in Canada) then the child will not be eligible to pass on her citizenship automatically. That is, if the child herself were to have a child overseas in the future, that child will not be classified as Canadian.

Hi
Greek citizens don't require a TRV (visitor visa) to enter Canada. |

If your wife is Greek, she will pass Greek citizenship to your child no matter where she gives birth.

That's true, but as far as the Greek government is concerned, the child will remain 100% Canadian until the parents register the child by applying for a Greek ID, or until the child decides to apply for Greek ID at the age of 18.
