Length of time before coming back

I am here in Canada visiting my boyfriend. I was given a 6 month visitor record when I got here. I am wanting to stay longer. Do I need to apply for a extension or if we go to the states for a weekend then come back in will they give me a new date and visitor record? If not how long do I have to be out of Canada before coming back in to be with my boyfriend.. Thanks for any help you can give me..

	Which I found out is a visitor visa... and is not a multi entry visa..
