Student Visa Validity

I posted this question yesterday but for some reason I don't see this any more. But I need help please..

On the student visa of my nephew the dates are written as,

Date of issue: 02/08/2011 
Expiry date: 23/06/2012

I am not sure if the visa expires on the date given? He is coming to Canada for 4 year undergraduate course. 

His passport expires in 07/2012. Is it because of that? So, what does he need to do?

Renew passport after a year
Re-apply for strudent visa????

1. He renews his passport.
2. With a renewed passport, he then extends his study permit.

I would like to know the process of extending student visa. I know passport renewal as I had to do it once.

The process..just reapply with all required documents.  Only difference is that you'll check the box stating that you'd like to extend the visa.  I actually had to do it twice while I was in school. It's pretty painless.
