Lost PR Status, Student Visa or Travel Doc

Hello,
I got my Canadian PR in 2006. I attended college 2 years from 2007-2009 in Canada. However after that I moved to the US and only visited once for about a week. I think the PR expired in 2011.

Now I would like to reapply to a college in Canada. What are my options to approach? Is there a way I can still be considered a permanent resident or do I have to apply for a Student Visa. I am an American citizen.
