My mother wants to apply for the citizenship. according to CIC website, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/cit-test.asp
you do the test if you are between 18 and 54, she was born on august 1, 1957 I could swear i read elsewhere that its 18 and 55 is she going to take the test or not? she is applying this week Cheers

Since she is 54 years old, she will have to take the test. If she waits a few more months and applies on or after August 1st, 2012, than she won't have to take the exam.
I hope that help! |

Yes I know she is 54 years and 9 months. Still she is 54 years old until August 1st, when she turns 55.
If you have doubt, call CIC. But I am positive that if she signs the application form today, she will have to take the test. |

Agreed. She is currently 54. If she submits the application now then she will be writing the test. She has to wait until August if she wants to avoid the test.

I just called them
YES she is considered 54 and you are right BUTTTT She said even if she signs it today, when they get to her application to change the status from (RECEVIED) To (IN PROCESS) it will take 6-7 months, and she will be beyond 55 at that time :) She said that she wont have to take it for sure ... They had such cases before Its good to know, as my mom has an eye problem and difficulty reading so i had to read that for her |

There are other ways to obtain a waiver for the test.
But as with most processes at CIC, the primary criteria are in essence locked in as of the date the application is signed. Meaning, as you were advised by CIC, and as others have said, that whether or not she is exempt (from test, from language requirement as well) depends on whether she was 55 or older on the day she applies. Does not matter how long it takes to process the application. For example: People who apply who were short of 1095 days presence as of the date they applied, does not matter if they remain in Canada for the next two years while waiting to see the CJ, the subsequent two years in Canada will not count toward meeting the residency requirement. Waiting until August to apply makes more sense especially if she has trouble reading due to a vision problem. |

Hi mero1984,
They consider the age at the date of application. If your mother wants to avoid the test, she MUST wait and submit her application on or after August 01, 2012. Good Luck!
